Portraiture

What makes a good portrait so special?

When a camera is not involved, the artist is capturing something very subjective. A portrayal of another human being. A visual representation. An opinion. A bias, loving or scathing.

At first sight we take in the features and thoughts of the person painted. Afterall, we are standing face to face. But gradually we untangle the illusion and set about revealing the judgement the artist makes about the face they frame. So many emotions! Utterly mesmerising in a museum!
