Yves Saint Lauren…

Wool, Jersey and silk, A line dresses. Pre -dyed fabrics rather than printed – each colour an individual piece of fabric. Heavy fabrics ensured the design hung straight, without distortion. Saint Laurent acknowledged that Mondrian inspired him to focus on simple dresses, with minimal decoration. The resul is a defined silhouette with a hidden structure.

The shift dress drops away from the shoulders, encouraging freedom and movement because it forms a screen over the female body – a symbol for feminism and equality. And so by borrowing from Mondrian in these garments, Saint Laurent is faithful to Mondrian’s cause: pragmatic liberation, utopian ideals, an easier, happier life.
