Mondrian said he wanted to create a discipline whose laws would reflect the order of the universe. An important rule he imposed upon this series was the strict use of straight line rather than curved.
When you realise one attempt was followed closely by another, you see that the canvases thought of together were a process of experimentation, through tessellation, through trial and error - with huge ambitions in mind.
Which makes it even more fascinating that Composition 2 has made its way onto our bottle. Could Mondrian have realised which painting would be most recognisable?
